Diverticular disease is a difficult management problem for all physicians and its incidence is currently increasing. This text deals practically with the cases which may prove difficult for the surgeon. The approach is problem-oriented and designed to lead the surgeon step-by-step through patient selection, specific surgical procedures, pitfalls and complications and the preoperative case.

A reference on congenital and acquired diverticular disease of the small and large bowel, focusing predominantly on colonic diverticulosis, but including small-bowel diverticula as well. Topics are presented as clinical scenarios encountered in practice. Section I deals with diagnostic dilemmas, and Section II presents challenging technical problems resulting from diverticulitis and details surgical therapeutic options with their respective complications. Section III presents problems with selected patient populations, and Section IV deals with unusual problems, including giant colonic diverticula and small-bowel diverticular disease.
