The Bachkovo Monastery “Dormition of the Theotokos” is Bulgaria’s second-largest monastery after Rila, renowned for its rich history and cultural significance. Founded in 1083 by the Byzantine commander of Georgian origin, Gregory Pakourianos, and his brother Abasiy, it blends Byzantine, Georgian, and Bulgarian influences. Located 30 km from Plovdiv and 10 km from Asenovgrad in the Chepelare River valley, it is surrounded by the scenic Rhodope Mountains. Originally named “Petricheski” after the nearby Petric fortress, it was later renamed after the village of Bachkovo. History: In the 11th century, it served as a hub for Georgian monks and hosted the Petritsoni literary school, fostering cultural ties between Georgia and Byzantium. The Georgian philosopher Ioane Petritsi was among its notable figures. In 1344, it came under Bulgarian patronage under Tsar Ivan-Alexander, but was conquered by the Ottomans in 1364. Patriarch Evtimiy of Tarnovo is believed to have been exiled here in 1393. After destruction in the 16th century, it was rebuilt in 1604 with the new church “Dormition of the Theotokos.” Highlights: Miraculous Icon of the Virgin Mary: Believed to have been brought from Georgia in the 14th century, it was hidden in the Kluviiya area during Ottoman times and rediscovered in the 17th century by shepherds. A traditional procession to Kluviiya takes place on the second day of Easter—Ossuary: A two-story building from 1083, the oldest preserved structure. The ground floor holds monks’ remains, while the upper floor is a chapel with rare 14th-century frescoes. Refectory: Built in 1623, it features well-preserved frescoes and a historic marble table used by monks. Museum: Houses ancient icons, liturgical books, and utensils, some with ornate silver bindings. Flora: The courtyard hosts rare plants like Chinese pine, laurel, and magnolia.
Asen’s Fortress is a medieval stronghold located 2 km from Asenovgrad, perched on a high cliff above the Chepelare River in the Rhodope Mountains. Known historically as “Petric,” it is an iconic landmark of the region and one of Bulgaria’s best-preserved fortresses. Written records from the 11th century in Bachkovo Monastery documents mention it, though archaeological evidence points to fortifications from the Bronze Age. History: The fortress existed in Thracian times but was fortified in the 11th century by Gregory Pakourianos, who mentioned “two fortresses” in the Stanimaka region. It played a key role in the Second Bulgarian Empire in the 12th century and was captured by Crusaders during the Fourth Crusade in 1204. Excavations since 1970 have uncovered coins from the Komnenos era, pottery from the Second Bulgarian Empire, and weapons, highlighting its historical significance. Highlights: Church of the Holy Mother of God Petritska: The best-preserved structure is A two-story fortress from the 12th-13th century. Its frescoes are a valuable example of medieval art. It was long managed by Bachkovo Monastery. Panorama: Offers breathtaking views of the Rhodopes and Asenovgrad, especially stunning in spring. Lighting: The fortress is illuminated in colorful lights at night, ideal for photography.
