Born in 1837, the son of a Karlovo guildsman, Levsky passed, like the Renaissance itself, throught the schoolroom and the Church to find hid true vocation and his death in the struggle for political freedom. Levsky is one of the very few national heroes of whom it can be said that there is no discrepancy between the legend and the man, a hero who remains a hero even when the historians get to work with their arc - lamps and dissecting knives.
